The latest deck built by Artisan Shop is a 550 square foot floating deck. When building a deck, every step is taken to ensure a long lasting build.
Usually the first component to rot out in a floating deck is the framing below due to high moisture content. Joist guard tape is used to create a membrane between the joists and the deck boards to prevent moisture getting caught between (see video). Also, having proper ventilation around the perimeter, while maintaining critter control is imperative.
Another common practice that is skipped by builders is having a water proof membrane with positive overlap behind the ledger boards that support the upper decks. In addition to this, an aluminum drip cap is installed under the siding and over the ledger board giving double protection from moisture getting caught between the house and the framing.
